Must-Have Garden Supplies to Make Your Garden More Successful

Have a successful garden this season! Here you will find some must have garden supplies that have helped make my garden more successful.

Gardening has always been one of my most rewarding hobbies. It brings joy, beauty, and fresh produce into my life. However, I’ve learned that to ensure my garden thrives, having the right tools and supplies is essential. Here you will find some must have garden supplies that have helped make my garden more successful:

1. Quality Soil and Compost

Healthy soil is the foundation of a successful garden. I always invest in high-quality soil and compost to provide my plants with the necessary nutrients. Compost enriches the soil, improves its structure, and promotes healthy root development.

2. Watering Equipment

Consistent watering is crucial for plant health. Depending on the size of my garden, I use:

3. Hand Tools

Basic hand tools make planting, weeding, and maintenance much easier for me:

  • Trowel: Ideal for digging small holes and transplanting.
  • Pruners: Essential for trimming and shaping plants.
  • Weeder: Helps me remove weeds without damaging nearby plants.

4. Mulch

Mulch helps retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. I prefer organic mulches, such as bark chips or straw, which also break down and improve soil quality over time. I usually purchase cyrpess mulch from Atwoods or Walmart.

5. Plant Supports

Certain plants, like tomatoes and beans, need support as they grow. I use stakes, trellises, and cages to keep plants upright and prevent damage from sprawling. I also use tomato cages on my squash plants too. Also, I trim the lower leaves off and guide it to grow up the tomato cage. This makes squash easier to find and keeps insects at bay when the leaves do not touch the ground.

6. Gardening Gloves

Protecting my hands from thorns, splinters, and dirt is important, so I use durable gardening gloves. I look for gloves that offer a good balance between flexibility and protection.

7. Wheelbarrow or Garden Cart

Transporting soil, compost, plants, and other materials becomes much easier with a wheelbarrow or garden cart. This is especially useful for our garden and yard.

8. Pest Control

Keeping pests at bay is crucial to protecting my plants:

  • Organic Pesticides: These are safe for the environment and effective against common garden pests.
  • Natural Pest repellants. You can read this post for more Natural Pest Repellant tips.
  • Netting or Row Covers: These protect plants from insects and birds.

9. Fertilizers

While compost, like chicken manure, provides nutrients, sometimes my plants need an extra boost. I choose from organic or synthetic fertilizers based on my plants’ needs.

10. Gardening Books or Apps

Knowledge is power. Gardening books,a pps, or blog posts provide me with invaluable information on plant care, pest control, and garden design, helping me make informed decisions. I have many posts that will help you in your garden.

11. Raised Beds

For those with poor soil or limited space, raised beds offer better control over soil quality, drainage, and can make gardening more accessible. I’ve found them incredibly useful in my own garden.

So you want to start a garden?  When it comes to a small basic garden, it really isn't all that hard to get started.
Our Beautiful garden!

12. Garden Kneeler and Seat

Saving my knees and back with a garden kneeler and seat has been a game-changer. This versatile tool allows me to comfortably work at ground level without strain.

13. Rain Gauge

Monitoring rainfall helps me decide when additional watering is needed. A rain gauge is a simple yet effective tool for this purpose.

Conclusion

Equipping myself with these essential garden supplies has set me up for gardening success. Whether you’re a novice or an experienced gardener, having the right tools makes all the difference in nurturing a thriving, beautiful garden. Happy gardening!

Plan Your Garden Layout Strategically to Grow More food

Before diving into the soil, take a moment to plan your garden layout. Consider the sunlight exposure, soil quality, and the specific needs of each plant. Group plants with similar water and nutrient requirements together to optimize growth and minimize competition.

The foundation of a thriving garden lies in the soil. Invest in high-quality compost and organic matter to enhance soil fertility. Regularly amend your soil with compost to improve its structure, drainage, and nutrient content. Healthy soil is the key to growing robust, nutrient-rich plants.

vegetable omelet

Hello, fellow egg enthusiasts! Today, I’m excited to share with you one of my favorite breakfast recipes that never fails to kickstart my day with a burst of flavors and colors. As someone who raises chickens and enjoys the luxury of fresh eggs daily, I take pride in creating delicious meals that showcase the goodness of farm-fresh produce. Join me in whipping up an easy Vegetable Omelette featuring bell peppers, spinach, and onions – a healthy feast for the eyes and the taste buds!

Vegetable Omelet Recipe with Farm Fresh Eggs Ingredients:

  1. Fresh eggs from my lovely chickens
  2. Colorful bell peppers (red, yellow, green, or all 3)
  3. Fresh spinach leaves (You can wilt it before you add it to the omelet or add fresh leaves)
  4. Diced tomatoes
  5. Onions (use your favorite onion, or what you have available in the refrigerator)

Gather the Freshest Ingredients

Start by collecting your farm-fresh eggs from your backyard chicken coop. The vibrant, golden yolks and firm whites make all the difference in creating a truly flavorful omelet however, store-bought will suffice too. Head to your garden or local market for the freshest bell peppers, spinach leaves, and, onions.

Vegetables that Go Into Omelette

Prepping the vegetables for your omelet is pretty simple. Chop the bell peppers into colorful, bite-sized pieces. Dice the onions thinly, and if you’re using fresh spinach, give it a quick rinse. Dice the tomatoes into small pieces. These are the best vegetables for an omelet. The key here is to have all your veggies ready to go, making the cooking process a breeze.

Crack and Whisk the Eggs

In a bowl, crack the fresh eggs. Witness the rich orange hues of the yolks as they mix with the clear egg whites. Give them a gentle whisk, incorporating air for a fluffy texture.

Begin Cooking Your Omelet

Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a touch of olive oil. Allow to heat and pour in the eggs, add the vegetables, and distribute across eggs evenly.

Continue cooking until the eggs are fully set but still moist. If you prefer a bit of gooeyness in the middle, now is the time to fold your omelette in half, otherwise cook a bit longer before you fold the omelette. Slide it onto a plate, and behold the masterpiece of colors and flavors!

What is Tajin?

My cooking adventures often lead me to discover unique flavors that add a special touch to my dishes. One such discovery that has become a staple in my kitchen is Tajin. A versatile seasoning that has transformed the way I enjoy food.

Mexican Spice Blend

Originating from Mexico, Tajin is a blend of chili peppers, dehydrated lime, and salt, creating a symphony of sweet, savory, and tangy notes. The first time I encountered Tajin, it was sprinkled on freshly sliced cucumbers from my garden. The contrast between the spiciness of the chili, the zesty lime, and the freshness of the cucumber was amazing for my taste buds.

What makes Tajin truly exceptional is its ability to enhance a wide range of dishes. From fruits to snacks and even savory meals, this seasoning adds a burst of flavor that is unexpected and delightful. Seven Ways to Attract Friendly Wildlife into Your Garden

Creating an eco-friendly garden is a fantastic strategy to attract friendly wildlife into your garden by promoting environmental health and establishing a lush ecosystem in your outdoor space. Welcoming friendly wildlife to your garden not only adds to its charm but is also essential for natural pest control. Here are seven ways to make your garden an inviting sanctuary for beneficial creatures:

Plant Trees, Hedges, and Shrubs

Diversify your garden with an assortment of woody plants. Trees, hedges, and shrubs offer food, shelter, and nesting sites for birds, bees, and beneficial insects, preserving the ecological equilibrium in your garden.

Preserve Deadwood

While it may lack visual appeal, deadwood is teeming with life. Fallen logs and decaying trees create habitats for fungi, mosses, insects, and reptiles, which attract birds and other wildlife that help maintain a healthy garden ecosystem.

Seven ways to attract friendly wildlife to your garden

Incorporate Water Features

Ponds, birdbaths, and other water features attract amphibians and birds. These predators are invaluable in controlling insect populations. Collect rainwater or recycle gray water for these features to maintain sustainability.

Allow Grass to Grow

Patches of long grass provide excellent hiding spots for small fauna and beneficial insects. Periodic rotation of uncut areas can lead to robust lawn health and become a natural haven for wildlife that aids in garden maintenance.

Seven Ways to Attract Friendly Wildlife into Your Garden vegetable garden

Cultivate a Variety of Plant Species

Opt for a rich variety of native plants that are adapted to your local climate conditions. Favoring plants from local garden centers over larger store chains may reduce the likelihood of pest infestations and support regional biodiversity.

wildflowers

Encourage Wildflower Growth to Attract Friendly Wildlife into Your Garden

Wildflowers are not only visually pleasing but also play a critical role in supporting insects, which aid in pollination and natural pest management. Nettle patches, for instance, can be the perfect breeding grounds for butterflies.

Install Birdhouses and Nesting Boxes to Attract Helpful Wildlife into Your Garden

To encourage avian visitors, set up nesting boxes and birdhouses around your garden, positioned at a safe height. Maintaining these shelters can invite birds to take residence and partake in controlling pests naturally.

By following these environmentally conscious practices, you can attract a balanced mix of wildlife to your garden. Doing so will enhance the natural beauty of your space while contributing to a healthier and more sustainable environment.

Welcome to day 30 of 31 Awesome Fall Activities With Your KidsHow to Make a Simple Ring Toss Pumpkin Game involves glow necklaces and pumpkins and is very simple, yet very entertaining for younger kids.  It would be perfect for a Halloween Party or families gathering at Thanksgiving.  This is a cheap one for me because I only had to buy the glow necklaces.  We had plenty of pumpkins in our garden this fall.

How to Make a Pumpkin Ring Toss Game

What your child will learn

  • Large Motor Skills
  • Tossing skills
  • Eye-hand coordination

Supplies

  • Pumpkins
  • Glow Necklaces

Set Up the Game

I took this game to my daughter’s Kindergarten Halloween party and the kids really enjoyed it.  We set the pumpkins against a wall to make it easier for them and let them get pretty close.  We lined the kids up, then let them take turns tossing the rings on the pumpkins.  It was actually harder than it looks, especially for little ones.  As I said before, we let them move a little closer so they had a better chance at getting a ring around the pumpkin.

More Game Ideas

This would be a fun family game at Thanksgiving too.  It would be great for kids and adults.  I love implementing pumpkins into my holidays, including Thanksgiving.

Conclusion

I love all things Fall!  Mostly I enjoy creating fun fall activities for my daughter.  Finding fun things to do with all of our pumpkins makes me really happy! Do you grow pumpkins in your garden?  What creative use do you have for your pumpkins?  Does your family gather for Thanksgiving?  Playing games was one of my favorite things my cousins and I did when we gathered together for the holidays.
