How to Easily Preserve Pumpkin Stems

One day while scrolling the internet I came across a post about preserving pumpkin stems!  I had lots of pumpkins in my garden and had not even thought about saving the stems for crafts or even to sell on eBay.  So, I decided this year I would make sure to save as many pumpkin stems as possible and show you How to Easily Preserve Pumpkin Stems.

pumpkin stems

I will start with the easiest way.  Most people won’t go about it this way, but I had quite a few pumpkins and most of them were just on display outside my house.

1st Option (easy option)

  1. Let your pumpkins get old and soft outside.  This is the super duper easy way!
  2. Take a gloved hand (the stems can be prickly) and gently pull on the stem of the pumpkin.  If it comes loose easily, you are pretty much done!
  3. Check to see if there is any pumpkin skin or guts on the stem.  Wash and scrape any of it off.
  4. Now place your stems in a basket or box and let them dry for several weeks.  Since your pumpkin has been outside, it may only take a week or two for your stems to be fully dry.  They will feel light and kind of hollow when dry.
  5. Once dry you can use them in your next craft project or sell them on eBay.

2nd Option

  1. Cut the stem from a fresh pumpkin.  Take a knife and cut a circle around the stem.
  2. Pull the cutout stem away from the pumpkin.
  3. Cut excess pumpkin away from the stem. Scape and clean the bottom of the stem.  You can use a butter knife, a file, or an old rag.
  4. Place the stems in a box or basket to dry.  This will take several weeks.  Possibly up to 8.  The stem will feel light and kind of hollow when dry.
  5. Once dry you can use them in your next craft project or sell them on eBay.

Pumpkin Stem Craft

Check out this craft I made with my pumpkin stems.  You can use them for any of your crafts!  I love discovering a way to repurpose items I already have!  I made these pumpkins with an old sweater that had a hole in it and was about to head to the trash.

Conclusion

It is super easy to preserve pumpkin stems.  Even if it’s past the Fall Season, you can save your pumpkin stems for next year, which is what I am doing.
