It’s day 1 of 31 Awesome Fall Activities to do with Your Child. Today we will show you How to Make Easy Flaky Dairy Free Pie Crust. For me, Fall is a time for baking pies! Pumpkin Pie, Apple Pie, Peach Pie, and Pecan pie are just a few of my favorites. The following recipe will create 4 pie crusts. My favorite thing about this recipe is it’s so easy!! My daughter loves to help me bake, but she has never made a pie crust. So, I decided making a pie crust and pie would be a great fall activity for us. I think encouraging your children to learn to bake and cook are essential for their development.

I am by no means a pie expert. A lot of time I will buy a frozen pie crust. But, there honestly is nothing as good as a homemade crust. What is great about this recipe is that you can freeze what you’re not ready to use. Make sure to divide your dough into 4 equal parts first. I pat my dough into a flat round thick disc, then wrap the leftover crust in plastic wrap, and place them in a freezer bag. When you are ready to use the frozen pie crust, just thaw in the fridge or on the counter. You can thaw one or as many as you need.
I am not a pretty pie maker! Who can relate?! I’m sure I just need more practice, but for now, I’m not good at it. I actually prefer to put my crust in a cake pan (you will likely have to bake a pie longer using a cake pan). This way I don’t have to do the edge crust. The main reason I don’t do the edge crust is because of the potential for it to easily burn. Most recipes will ask you to cover it with foil. Also, making the edge is kind of hard! Mine always looks terrible. So, I bake a lot of my pies in cake pans. Cake pans also leave more room for filling!

How to Make Easy Flaky Dairy Free Pie Crust
Ingredients
- 4 Cups flour
- 1 Tblsp sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 3/4 Cup butter flavored Crisco
- 1 Tblsp Vinegar
- 1/2 Cup water
- 1 egg
Instructions
- Mix flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in the shortening with a fork or use your food processor.
- In another bowl mix vinegar, water and egg. With your hands mold into 4 equal parts. You can place in the freezer at this time. (wrap each seperatly in plastic wrap, then place in a gallon freezer bag).
- Make sure not to handle the dough too much, it will change the texture and make it less flaky.
- Roll the dough into a circular shape about 2 inches larger than your pan (pie or cake). Gently place it in the pan (I use a cake pan). Using a knife, trim the uneven edges. (your done if using a cake pan). If using a pie pan trim the edges leaving about one inch hanging, then press into the top edges of the pan, using a fork or your finger to make a decorative edge.
My daughter and I made an Easy Peach Cream Pie with our crust. You can find the recipe here. This recipe is beyond delicious! I’ve made this pie so many times with fresh peaches and frozen peaches. This filling recipe is not dairy free.

Cooking together is a unique way to bond with you kids. Definitely going to try this simple recipe.
This recipe looks simple and easy to try. Involving kids together for cooking is great way of teaching plus good time for bonding and creating life long memories .
I haven’t made a pie crust for years! The ones in the refrigerator section at the store are my best friend. It’s not that I can’t, it’s just that Crisco goes rancid in our house because we use it so rarely. My recipe was from my mother-in-law who would be 94 this year–it was similar to yours, but used regular Crisco and no vinegar. There’s really nothing like a flaky Crisco crust though!
You may not be the best pie maker but that turned out alright. I could eat that 😀 . Anyway, I think cooking with kids is fun. Will keep that in mind when I’m a mom.
Yes, please! This looks delicious! I don’t have kids but I look forward to baking with my niece once she’s old enough. In the meantime, I will try this recipe while my “fur”-children stare me down 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
I might have to give this crust a try. The one I typically make is just a super simple 4 ingredient crust, but I’ll have to give this one a try and compare!
