The Fall season is one of my favorite seasons. I love all the fall colors, the cooler temperatures, and the smells of Autumn. I also love Halloween. Carving jack-o-lanterns, decorating the house, finding the perfect Halloween costume, and all of the treats! This post will focus on How to Make Halloween Costumes Kids Will Love. When my youngest daughter was smaller, I picked out and created costumes for her.
Choose Her Own Costume
Now that she is older, she likes to choose her own costume. And let’s just say, the last two years she’s come up with creative ideas! Last year she wanted to be Nahal from the Shimmer and Shine show on Nickelodeon. When I did my research, there were no costumes for Nahal. Plenty of cute Shimmer and Shine costumes, but no Nahal. So, the creative juices went to work to create her costume.
DIY Face Pain
This year she wants to be Puss in Boots, so I’m currently working on putting it together. We’ve had some practice with face paint, though I believe we will go in another direction on the face.
Make the costume myself or buy it?

Costumes I’ve created for my daughter with links to Do It Yourself!
Costume #1 Cute Penguin
The most sewing I ever did was on my daughter’s first Halloween Costume, a cute little penguin. You can find the pattern on Make it and Love It. This costume was super adorable but does require a bit of sewing skill. The directions and pattern are easy to follow through, so I think it is doable for almost anyone who knows how to use a sewing machine.
Costume #2 Pretty Ghost
When she was one-year-old I decided on a simple ghost costume. I wanted it to be cute and comfortable for her, but also have the spirit of Halloween. I bought the outfit on Etsy. The store, Think Pink Bows, no longer has the dress but you can search Etsy for “white tutu dress”.I found the ghost face on Honey Mommy. She has a full tutorial for the face and the tutu. I cut the face pattern from felt fabric, then used fabric glue to glue it to her little dress.
Costume #3 Kitty Cat
She wanted to be a cat when she was two years old. I found this adorable costume tutorial on Do it Yourself Divas. They have a video and written instructions. It’s a pretty simple DIY costume that is super adorable!
Costume #4 Glow in the Dark Skeleton
We also did this costume when she was two years old for daycare. I did not want to send her to daycare in the big tutu and tail. It would have just got torn up. So I made this very simple DIY skeleton with white glow-in-the-dark duck tape and black clothes. It came out super cute and was so easy to put together.
Costume #5 Dalmation Puppy
She picked out this adorable Dalmatian costume when she was three years old. I was lazy that year and just ordered the entire costume on Etsy, now that’s the easiest DIY, from Hand Picked Hand Made.
Costume #6 Nahal from Shimmer & Shine
This one took some work. This is Nahal from Shimmer and Shine. I’m not even sure why she insisted on being Nahal last year. Shimmer and Shine was not even her favorite show and she only watched it occasionally. I tried to talk her into something else when I could not find a costume, but she’s stubborn. So I had to get creative with this one!
I started out looking for a white cat costume. I finally found this white cat costume on Ebay for a pretty cheap price and used it as my starting point. You could also buy a white leotard or use a white shirt and pants. Sadly, it had a super short tail, so I had to order a white tail separately for her. Looking back now, I could have made one easily.
Next, I got some purple felt and cut out tiger-like stripes, making curly loops on some of them, like Nahal has on the show. I drew them out on paper, then traced them onto the fabric and cut them out. Then, I just hot glued the stripes to her costume, pants, paws, and tail. I tried to paint her face like Nahal, but I’m not artistic and I could not imagine the face paint would last at school. So, I found a cute little Nahal mask on Etsy from Treasured Forever. The costume turned out really cute when I finally finished it and my daughter loved it! She got lots of omments at school too!

These are such cute ideas! I need you to come up with a simple idea for me–we have to be Mario characters for Halloween at school. I may just be a Nintendo controller…that can’t be that hard, right?
That sounds like a cool and unique costume! I bet you can create it. Best of luck, and thank you for leaving a comment.
