My daughter loves to collect rocks and has been collecting for several years. I knew instantly that rock painting would be a blast for her! I came across a really neat rock painting kit on Amazon and decided that would be a great place for us to get started. We’ve also used our own rocks to paint. Really all you need are rocks and waterproof paint.
What your kids will learn from the activity
- art skills
- fine motor skills
- learning kindness
- writing skills
- spelling skills
- counting
- creativity
- patience
What you Need:
- Rocks with a nice flat surface for painting
- Waterproof paint
- Tablecloth
- Apron or old clothes
Painting Your Rocks
- Clean and dry your rocks.
- You will need to paint all of your darker colored rocks white to help the colors really pop. If your rock in white or really light in color, you can probably skip this step. Paint one side first and let dry, then paint the other side and let it dry. You could also just paint one side of your rock. My daughter and I did a mix of both.
- After the white dries on your rocks, paint with your main color. You will have to paint one side, and let it dry, then paint the other side and let it dry (if painting both sides).
- Paint your design on your rock next and let it dry. Paint any additional layers, letting each layer dry before painting the next.
What to do With Your Rocks
- You can keep them. My daughter keeps most of her rocks in a bucket. I’m afraid she is a future hoarder! LOL!
- You can display them. My daughter has her favorites displayed on her dresser.
- You can hide them for others to find. This is my favorite! But I can’t get my daughter to part with any of her rocks. You can hide them around the town you live in to help brighten someone’s day. My best suggestion would be to hide them at a park or walking trails. Or maybe near a hospital or nursing home. Get creative with your hiding places.
- Decorate your yard with the rocks. You could place them under a tree, in a fairy garden, near a flower bed, or in a vegetable garden. Any place you want to brighten up! I would love to start a fairy garden with my daughter! That could be a future activity for us. =)
