1. Quality Soil and Compost

Healthy soil is the foundation of a successful garden. I always invest in high-quality soil and compost to provide my plants with the necessary nutrients. Compost enriches the soil, improves its structure, and promotes healthy root development.

3. Hand Tools

4. Mulch

Mulch helps retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. I prefer organic mulches, such as bark chips or straw, which also break down and improve soil quality over time. I usually purchase cyrpess mulch from Atwoods or Walmart.

5. Plant Supports

Certain plants, like tomatoes and beans, need support as they grow. I use stakes, trellises, and cages to keep plants upright and prevent damage from sprawling. I also use tomato cages on my squash plants too. Also, I trim the lower leaves off and guide it to grow up the tomato cage. This makes squash easier to find and keeps insects at bay when the leaves do not touch the ground.

6. Gardening Gloves

Protecting my hands from thorns, splinters, and dirt is important, so I use durable gardening gloves. I look for gloves that offer a good balance between flexibility and protection.

Transporting soil, compost, plants, and other materials becomes much easier with a wheelbarrow or garden cart. This is especially useful for our garden and yard.

Keeping pests at bay is crucial to protecting my plants:

  • Organic Pesticides: These are safe for the environment and effective against common garden pests.
  • Natural Pest repellants. You can read this post for more Natural Pest Repellant tips.
  • Netting or Row Covers: These protect plants from insects and birds.

9. Fertilizers

While compost, like chicken manure, provides nutrients, sometimes my plants need an extra boost. I choose from organic or synthetic fertilizers based on my plants’ needs.

10. Gardening Books or Apps

Knowledge is power. Gardening books,a pps, or blog posts provide me with invaluable information on plant care, pest control, and garden design, helping me make informed decisions. I have many posts that will help you in your garden.
