The Best Vegetables to Grow in Pots

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are my favorite vegetable to grow in the garden.  They are so versatile and enjoyed by my entire family. They need rich deep soil and will need to be staked up with sturdy stakes or wire (tomato) cages. Make sure to place tomato plants in deep (tall) containers.

Peppers

Bell peppers and jalapenos grow great in containers or raised beds.  Peppers love the sun so make sure they are in a sunny spot during the day.

Cucumbers

Cucumbers work in containers too.  We grow ours in raised beds.  Make sure you have room for them to grow.  You can set up a wire fence or string across poles to give them space to climb. They also love rich soil and plenty of water.

Potatoes

Potatoes gro great in containers.  They even have special grow bags for potatoes!  Potatoes like loose, well=draining soil.  Add soil to the top once potatoes start forming near the surface.  When your potatoes are ready just dump the container, or open the flap to reach them.

Spinach

Spinach is a great Spring plant for our zone (6B), but once the blazing heat hits, I grow it inside, in a container.  It can also be grown in the winter months, inside.  This leafy plant works best in 8” deep pots.  They love water but require well-draining soil.

Lettuce

Lettuce is similar to spinach in its growing method.  There are many varieties of lettuce you can grow in containers. Lettuce is a great vegetable to grow in containers.

Onions

Onions are easy to grow and make good container plants.  They don’t take too much space and you can use the green tops too.

Squash

Summer squash and zucchini grow well in containers too.  You will need a deep container for your squash plants.

More Vegetables to Grow in Containers

There are several other vegetables that can grow in containers, but I picked the best ones for my list.  Carrots, beets, and radishes can grow in containers, but I feel they need a lot of dirt space to get very much production.  They do work great in raised beds.  You’re just not going to get much bang for your buck when you put them in containers.

The Best Fruits to Grow in Containers

Strawberries are known for spreading and requiring space, but they also work well in containers.  I have mine in a 3 level container.

Blueberries also grow well in containers.  They require acidic soil, plenty of water, and lots of sunlight.

The Best Herbs to Grow in Containers
