Welcome to Day 22 of 31 Days of Awesome Fall Activities With Your Kids. Today my daughter and I are going to help those who Want to Know The Easiest Way to Cook a Pumpkin. This tutorial will explain the easiest way to cook a pumpkin, puree it, and store it in the freezer. I like to let my daughter help me with canning, pickling, and freezing our fresh garden vegetables. I think it’s a super learning experience for her to start our garden from seed and see it go to the table. She learns the process of the entire cycle of the vegetables we grow in our garden.
We grow sugar sweet pumpkins in our garden. These pumpkins are perfect for turning into puree and freezing. Later I usually make pumpkin rolls, pumpkin bread, and pumpkin pie.
What your kids will learn
- How to process a pumpkin for puree
What you need
- Slow cooker
- Sugar sweet pumpkins (as many as you want to freeze. Most pumpkins will make about 2 cups of puree)
Instructions
- Clean your pumpkins with soapy warm water, scrubbing off any dirt or debris. Cut pumpkins in half and remove stem. Remove strings and seeds, scraping the sides of the pumpkin. You can use an ice cream scoop for this part.
- Place the pumpkin in the slow cooker with the outside facing up. You may have to cut the pieces smaller to make all of the pumpkin fit. I place two pumpkins in my slow cooker, layering the pieces on top of each other.
- Cover and cook on high for 2-3 hours. Test your pumpkin to see if it is soft by poking with a toothpick. It should easily pierce the skin.
- Carefully remove the pumpkin from the slow cooker and let cool. The pumpkin should easily fall from the skin. You can also use a spoon to pull the pumpkin from the skin.
- Puree pumpkin in a blender or food processor.
- I divide my pumpkin in freezer bags according to my favorite recipes. So, I made several bags that held 2/3 cup of puree (for pumpkin rolls) and several others that held 1 coup each (for pumpkin bread). This way you can pull it out as you need it per your recipe.
- I let my daughter help remove the seeds and strings. She also pulled the pumpkin from the skin once it was cooled and helped me put everything in freezer bags.
